Canary Islands also prohibits smoking – and finally imposes face masks

The Canary Islands has become the second region of Spain, following on from Galicia (as reported yesterday), to prohibit smoking in the streets or on terraces, where social distancing measures are not possible. The rule comes into effect from tomorrow, Friday.

As well as the ban on smoking, the Canary Islands has also imposed the compulsory use of face masks in public – finally following the path of all other regions in Spain that have already made face masks obligatory.

Other restrictions imposed in the Canary Islands include limiting gatherings to a maximum of 10 people, and nightlife venues can only be open if they have outdoor areas, with drinking and eating to be served at tables.

The measures were announced by the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, following a governing council meeting to evaluate the current outbreaks of Coronavirus there.

‘Smoking will not be allowed in open spaces, in places where there are crowds, if there is not sufficient social distance,’ Torres told a news conference, also adding that terraces were included in the restrictions. He said that smokers infected could blow droplets carrying the virus when they exhale.

Now that Galicia and the Canary Islands have imposed smoking bans – believed to be the first in Europe related to the virus – it has been reported that 8 other regions (Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Valencia, Cantabria, Asturias, Navarra and Madrid) are now also considering introducing the same measures.

*Discrepancies in figures

Although the Health Ministry updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures on 19 June following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for this period in Spain.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 have been 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 is 43,945 higher than in 2019.

Spain – ‘New Normality’
