CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 24 March for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,241,345. This is an overall increase of 7,026 against the figure released on Tuesday, with the ministry claiming that 3,835 have occurred in the past 24 hours

Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 5,516 cases over Monday, with 2,941 in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.

The incidence rate of new cases is now 132.22 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, rising slightly again for the fifth consecutive time. Yesterday it was 129.55 and on Monday 128.71. It is now under 100 in seven regions. It is at its lowest in the Valencia region (30), followed by the Balearic Islands (52), Murcia (56), Galicia (73), Castilla La Mancha (78), La Rioja (89) and Extremadura (92).

There have now been 62,178 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,241,345. The figure for the past 7 days is 30,171.

There are currently 7,806 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,855 are in intensive care. This represents 18.64% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 24 March is now 74,064 – an increase of 320 since Tuesday

The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 3,835 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 24 March, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,567 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,287)
  • 415 in the Basque Country (348)
  • 230 in Castilla y León (179)
  • 219 in the Canary Islands (222)
  • 211 in Andalusia (121)
  • 175 in Catalonia (127)
  • 171 in Navarra (118)
  • 148 in Aragón (106)
  • 118 in Asturias (117)
  • 114 in the Valencia Region (16)
  • 102 in Extremadura (64)
  • 74 in Galicia (45)
  • 65 in Murcia (47)
  • 62 in the Balearic Islands (22)
  • 50 in Cantabria (52)
  • 41 in La Rioja (17)
  • 29 in Castilla La Mancha (9)
  • 12 in Ceuta (14)
  • 32 in Melilla (30)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Spain has started to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 again from today [Wednesday 24 March]. The country is also extending the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for up to 65 year olds

Latest figures (up to 24 March) show that Spain has received 8,508,445 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 6,620,093 jabs have been administered. 2,276,233 people have now received a second jab, representing 4.8% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – Easter restrictions across Spain

Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.

Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain

Spain is lifting its travel ban on arrivals from the UK from 30 March. The suspension on arrivals from Brazil and South Africa remain in place until 13 April. Full report here: Spain lifts suspension of arrivals from the UK from 30 March

Also, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
