CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 11 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,730,575. This is an overall increase of 10,519 against the figure released on Thursday. The ministry claims that 5,849 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours (last Friday the figure had been 4,372 for a 24 hour period).

Figures released on Thursday had shown an overall increase of 7,955 infections over Wednesday, with the ministry claiming that 4,595 had occurred in a 24-hour period.

Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 9,773 infections over Monday (no updates were given on Tuesday due to the public holiday across Spain), yet 2,305 in a 24-hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.

The overall accumulated incidence rate for Spain is now 189.56 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days (yesterday’s figure was 188.72 and last Friday had been 231.11). It remains over 200 in ten regions: Aragón (239.14), Asturias (235.53), the Balearic Islands (238.20), Cantabria (258.31), Castilla La Mancha (224.86), Castilla y León (208.54), the Valencia region (200.27), Madrid (207.36), the Basque Country (275.53) and La Rioja (246.53) – as well as in the autonomous city of Melilla (252.06).

The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.

There have now been 89,142 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,730,575. The figure for the past 7 days is 37,619.

The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Friday 11 December is now 47,624 – an increase of 280 since Thursday. Last Friday’s data had shown 214 in 24 hours. It is now a total of 812 deaths in the past 7 days.

The highest increase of deaths to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 24 November when 537 were registered. The peak of recorded deaths for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 were registered.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 5,849 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 11 December, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,568 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,373)
  • 1,043 in Catalonia (1,137)
  • 499 in the Basque Country (337)
  • 476 in Castilla y León (308)
  • 395 in Galicia (255)
  • 317 in Andalusia (119)
  • 308 in Aragón (179)
  • 235 in the Valencia Region (150)
  • 223 in the Canary Islands (182)
  • 127 in Asturias (122)
  • 113 in the Balearic Islands (114)
  • 106 in Navarra (88)
  • 106 in Cantabria (44)
  • 106 in Castilla La Mancha (35)
  • 72 in Extremadura (42)
  • 70 in Murcia (50)
  • 50 in La Rioja (26)
  • 11 in Ceuta (12)
  • 24 in Melilla (22)

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain

The Spanish Congress voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. Spain changes Covid-19 test requirements for travellers

Spain has changed the Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to the country from today [Thursday 10 December] via airports or ports. Since Monday 23 November, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have had to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to €6,000. However, a negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’. *Discrepancies in figures
