CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 30 October for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,185,678. This is an overall increase of 25,595 against the figure released on Thursday. The ministry claims that 9,723 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours – the highest rise to date during this ‘second wave’.

The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 31 March when 9,222 new cases were registered.

Of the 25,595 overall increase in confirmed cases since Thursday’s figures, 5,348 are in Catalonia, 5,188 in Andalusia, 2,390 in Madrid, 2,026 in Castilla y León and 1,730 in the Basque Country.

There have now been 228,208 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,185,678. The figure for the past 7 days is 110,052.

According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 18,162 across Spain – of which 2,482 are in intensive care (UCI). This currently represents a total 26.59% occupation of intensive care wards for Covid-19 patients across Spain. The occupation is 47.12% in Aragón45% in La Rioja and 40.58% in Navarra. Hospital data could include patients who have shown symptoms of Coronavirus, but are still awaiting test results. The full data shows the numbers per region and % occupancy of UCI wards.

The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Friday 30 October is now 35,878 – an increase of 239 since Thursday. It is a total of 857 deaths in 7 days.

The current known peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.

Increase in infections

Figures released on Thursday had shown an overall increase of 23,580 infections against Wednesday, with the ministry claiming that 9,395 had occurred in a 24 hour period.

Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 19,765 infections against Tuesday, yet 9,303 in a 24 hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.

Of the 9,723 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 30 October, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,867 in Madrid (27,647 new cases in past 14 days)
  • 1,578 in Catalonia (53,714)
  • 1,199 in Aragón (13,587)
  • 1,173 in the Basque Country (13,118)
  • 643 in Galicia (7,573)
  • 637 in Navarra (7,769)
  • 601 in Andalusia (37,359)
  • 488 in Extremadura (5,472)
  • 435 in Asturias (4,094)
  • 213 in Castilla La Mancha (10,256)
  • 179 in Cantabria (2,078)
  • 167 in La Rioja (2,363)
  • 140 in the Valencia Region (11,582)
  • 102 in the Canary Islands (1,651)
  • 83 in the Balearic Islands (2,447)
  • 52 in Castilla y León (18,250)
  • 37 in Murcia (7,522)
  • 73 in Ceuta (622)
  • 56 in Melilla (1,104)

New ‘State of Alarm’ in Spain

The Spanish Congress has voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The nationwide State of Alarm was declared on Sunday to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. *Discrepancies in figures

Although the Health Ministry updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures on 19 June following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for Spain during the first half of this year.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
