CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 9 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,712,101. This is an overall increase of 9,773 against the figure released on Monday. There were no updates yesterday due to the national holiday in Spain. The ministry claims that 2,305 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours (last Wednesday the figure had been 5,060 for a 24 hour period).
The overall accumulated incidence rate for Spain is now 193.26 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days (Monday’s figure was 215.10 and last Wednesday had been 251.61). It remains over 200 in nine regions: Aragón (254.61), Asturias (264.18), the Balearic Islands (227.59), Cantabria (270.02), Castilla La Mancha (225.20), Castilla y León (224.83), Navarra (202.99), the Basque Country (286.67) and La Rioja (267.99) – as well as in the autonomous city of Melilla (227.78).
The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
There have now been 90,884 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,712,101. The figure for the past 7 days is 36,966.
The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 9 December is now 47,019 – an increase of 373 since Monday. Last Wednesday’s data had shown 369 in 24 hours. It is now a total of 700 deaths in the past 7 days.
The highest increase of deaths to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 24 November when 537 were registered. The peak of recorded deaths for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections
Figures released on Monday had shown an overall increase of 17,681 infections over Friday, with the ministry claiming that 1,800 had occurred in a 24-hour period.
Friday had seen an overall increase of 8,745 infections over Thursday, yet 4,372 in a 24-hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.
Of the 2,305 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 9 December, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 427 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 282)
- 346 in Galicia (239)
- 257 in Catalonia (206)
- 239 in Madrid (216)
- 149 in Castilla y León (132)
- 109 in Andalusia (136)
- 106 in the Balearic Islands (84)
- 106 in Aragón (121)
- 103 in the Canary Islands (0) – no update on Monday
- 104 in Asturias (115)
- 88 in Cantabria (58)
- 86 in Navarra (82)
- 55 in La Rioja (44)
- 48 in Castilla La Mancha (15)
- 38 in Extremadura (56)
- 35 in the Valencia Region (1)
- 4 in Murcia (1)
- 0 in Ceuta (7)
- 5 in Melilla (5)

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain
The Spanish Congress voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. Negative PCR test required
Since Monday 23 November, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries must show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. *Discrepancies in figures
