Sitges Town Council signs ‘pre-agreement’ to host events for America’s Cup

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup will be held in Barcelona between August and October 2024. The city will be the first venue ever to host both an Olympic Games and an America’s Cup yachting event.

The selection of the Catalan capital as the venue to host the event was announced a year ago and, a few weeks later, it transpired that Sitges had aspirations to become one of the main sub-venues.

Last week, twelve months after that initial selection, Sitges Town Council signed a ‘protocol of intentions’ with the sailing team Sail Team BCN, a new America’s Cup team created in Barcelona to challenge for the Youth & Women’s America’s Cup in 2024. Both parties have said that the content of the agreement is ‘absolutely confidential’ and that it will not be made public until two weeks from now, when all the pending details have been closed.

The existence of this document and the same confidentiality agreement imposed on its signatories seem to confirm that Sitges has certified its privileged position to host part of the official or complementary programming of the America’s Cup, which is no small feat. What is waiting to be made public is what exactly it might entail, as well as where and when.
