The emblematic houses on Garraf beach near Sitges have now received recognition of their cultural heritage.
The Catalan government has chosen to recognise the scenic beauty of the area by declaring the idyllic setting as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN). This distinction represents the maximum heritage protection granted by the Catalan government.
The row of 33 houses were originally intended to act as cabins for bathers or to store equipment for fishing, but over the years expanded to become homes with unique characteristics. Although they all retain their own separate identities, they all form a unit framed solely by a continuous concrete sidewalk that unifies them.
Located in the small town of Garraf on the beach, ‘Les Casetes’ are a classic example of popular Mediterranean architecture from the 1930s, and which at the time harmonised with the surroundings of the Catalan coast.
