Part of the ceiling of the Sitges municipal gym and swimming pool collapsed into the bar area on Saturday morning – for reasons unknown. The considerable damage happened when the bar, the swimming pool and the gym – which is installed just above – were closed and therefore no injuries were reported.
The entire interior structure of the roof, located next to the side of the bar, collapsed, with broken beams and damaged panels. The gym area above this section of the ceiling is normally used for weight training.
Both the bar and the bodybuilding and cardiovascular areas of the gym have been sealed off by the Sitges Local Police, waiting for the area to be cleaned and the structure secured. In addition to the local police, the fire brigade and the emergency medical service went to the scene. The municipal swimming pool and gymnasium building dates back to 2007.
