Latest long weekend of visitors brings further relief to the local economy

The re-opening of borders and the relaxation of restrictions since the end of the State of Alarm has now resulted in a few weekends with significant activity in Sitges. Visitors have been filling the streets, restaurants, bars and many of the local hotels.

The latest three-day weekend (for the Whit Monday holiday in Barcelona and in various towns in the metropolitan area) saw an average 80% occupancy in the town’s hotels – with some hotels full.

There is now ‘moderate confidence’ in the hotel sector due to the immediate results since restrictions were lifted and the forecasts for the summer, although concern remains about the slow recovery in congress and conference activity. This is important because while at weekends the hotels have been 80% occupied, during weekdays the average occupancy still doesn’t reach 25%.

The three days of the Whit Monday holiday weekend also had a positive effect on local bars and restaurants. Several restaurants put up the ‘fully booked’ sign at lunchtimes and recorded good business in the evenings. The weekend was also preceded by the nightlife clinical trial last Thursday, which also had a positive impact on the local hospitality sector.

Shops have also seen greater activity in recent days. Several shopkeepers have described it as being like any other Spring weekend before the pandemic.
