CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 24 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,647,520. This is an overall increase of 11,067 against the figure released on Friday, of which 1,017 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 4,792 over Thursday, of which 2,504 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped another six points to 129.41 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Friday it was 135.77 and Thursday 139.89.

Only two regions are above 200: the Basque Country (219) and Madrid (202). It remains under 100 in nine regions: Valencia (29), the Balearic Islands (38), Murcia (70), Asturias (70), Castilla La Mancha (75), Extremadura (80), Galicia (80), the Canary Islands (83) and Cantabria (86).

There have now been 61,407 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,647,520. The figure for the past 7 days is 27,825

There are currently 5,614 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,627 are in intensive care. This represents 16.71% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Monday 24 May is now 79,711 – an increase of 110 since Friday

Increase in infections per region

Of the 1,017 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 24 May, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 233 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 7)
  • 171 in Madrid (960)
  • 122 in Castilla y León (254)
  • 96 in Andalusia (280)
  • 89 in the Canary Islands (154)
  • 71 in Aragón (239)
  • 46 in Navarra (72)
  • 36 in Galicia (87)
  • 29 in Asturias (62)
  • 28 in La Rioja (39)
  • 27 in Catalonia (114)
  • 26 in Extremadura (66)
  • 20 in Cantabria (30)
  • 16 in Murcia (74) 
  • in the Balearic Islands (31)
  • in the Valencia Region (22)
  • in Castilla La Mancha (0) 
  • 1 in Ceuta (1)
  • in Melilla (13)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 24 May) show that Spain has received 25,747,905 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 24,534,056 jabs have been administered. 16,709,939 people have now received at least one jab, representing 35.2% of the population. 8,130,648 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 17.1% of the population.
