CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 26 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,657,886. This is an overall increase of 5,007 against the figure released on Tuesday, of which 2,579 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 5,539 over Monday, of which 2,100 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped two points to 126.30 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days – the lowest figure since last August. On Tuesday it was 128.12 and Monday 129.41.

Only one region is above 200: the Basque Country (207). It remains under 100 in eight regions: Valencia (30), the Balearic Islands (38), Asturias (69), Murcia (71), Galicia (74), the Canary Islands (79), Extremadura (81) and Cantabria (82).

There have now been 59,928 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,657,886. The figure for the past 7 days is 26,794

There are currently 5,100 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,489 are in intensive care. This represents 15.34% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 26 May is now 79,855 – an increase of 54 since Tuesday

Increase in infections per region

Of the 2,579 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 26 May, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 906 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 806)
  • 355 in the Basque Country (259)
  • 256 in Andalusia (104)
  • 223 in Castilla y León (221)
  • 166 in Aragón (125)
  • 101 in the Canary Islands (90)
  • 89 in Catalonia (70)
  • 74 in La Rioja (42)
  • 67 in Extremadura (77)
  • 67 in Asturias (35)
  • 57 in Galicia (46)
  • 56 in Murcia (68) 
  • 54 in the Valencia Region (24)
  • 50 in Navarra (53)
  • 32 in Cantabria (43)
  • in the Balearic Islands (12)
  • in Castilla La Mancha (5) 
  • 3 in Ceuta (0)
  • in Melilla (20)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 26 May) show that Spain has received 27,210,560 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 25,280,864 jabs have been administered. 17,187,731 people have now received at least one jab, representing 36.2% of the population. 8,434,233 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 17.8% of the population.
