CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 21 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,636,453. This is an overall increase of 4,792 against the figure released on Thursday, of which 2,504 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Thursday had seen an overall increase of 5,733 over Wednesday, of which 2,816 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this third wave of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped another four points to 135.77 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Thursday it was 139.89 and Wednesday 144.56.

It is under 100 in nine regions: Valencia (29), the Balearic Islands (42), Murcia (68), Asturias (71), Extremadura (80), Galicia (81), the Canary Islands (83), Cantabria (94) and Castilla La Mancha (95),

There have now been 64,424 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,636,453. The figure for the past 7 days is 28,008

There are currently 5,717 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,655 are in intensive care. This represents 16.97% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Friday 21 May is now 79,601 – an increase of 19 since Thursday, again the lowest daily increase since last August. 

Increase in infections per region

Of the 2,504 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 21 May, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 960 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 989)
  • 280 in Andalusia (275)
  • 254 in Castilla y León (224)
  • 239 in Aragón (245)
  • 154 in the Canary Islands (177)
  • 114 in Catalonia (131)
  • 87 in Galicia (71)
  • 74 in Murcia (54) 
  • 72 in Navarra (59)
  • 66 in Extremadura (64)
  • 62 in Asturias (77)
  • 39 in La Rioja (30)
  • 31 in the Balearic Islands (11)
  • 30 in Cantabria (26)
  • 22 in the Valencia Region (37)
  • in the Basque Country (332)
  • in Castilla La Mancha (0) 
  • 1 in Ceuta (1)
  • 13 in Melilla (14)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 21 May) show that Spain has received 25,747,905 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 23,962,365 jabs have been administered. 16,347,683 people have now received at least one jab, representing 34.5% of the population. 7,865,313 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 16.6% of the population.
