CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 16 April for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,407,283. This is an overall increase of 10,598 against the figure released on Thursday, and of which 5,091 have occurred in the past 24 hours.
Thursday had seen an overall increase of 9,663 cases against Wednesday, of which 5,087 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate has jumped by 10 points to 213.05 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Thursday it was 202.72 and on Wednesday 200.98. The incidence rate is at its highest in Navarra (443), Madrid (372) and the Basque Country (375). It remains under 100 in just four regions: the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Galicia and Murcia.
There have now been 101,096 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,407,283. The figure for the past 7 days is 51,201.
There are currently 9,788 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,180 are in intensive care. This represents 21.71% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. Before the start of the Easter holiday, the UCI occupation was 18.4%.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Friday 16 April is now 76,981 – an increase of 99 over the figures released on Thursday.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 5,091 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 16 April, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 1,849 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 2,053)
- 727 in the Basque Country (767)
- 387 in Castilla y León (369)
- 307 in Andalusia (316)
- 293 in Aragón (271)
- 271 in the Canary Islands (203)
- 202 in Navarra (188)
- 190 in Catalonia (149)
- 134 in Cantabria (66)
- 126 in Asturias (155)
- 119 in the Valencia Region (120)
- 97 in Galicia (102)
- 97 in La Rioja (46)
- 85 in Extremadura (113)
- 79 in Castilla La Mancha (57)
- 40 in the Balearic Islands (22)
- 39 in Murcia (49)
- 16 in Ceuta (11)
- 33 in Melilla (30)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 16 April) show that Spain has received 13,703,085 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 12,330,755 jabs have been administered. 3,328,701 people have now received a second jab, representing 7% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – current restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021 and the government has recently said that it will not be extending it further beyond that date. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry imposed a perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. After 9 April, each region has returned to applying its own measures, in line with powers granted under the State of Alarm. Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain
Spain has lifted its travel ban on arrivals from the UK. The suspension on arrivals from Brazil and South Africa remains in place until 13 April. Full report here: Spain lifts suspension of arrivals from the UK
Travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
