CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 15 March for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,195,062. This is an overall increase of 11,358 against the figure released on Friday. Last Monday the figure had been 11,958 for the weekend, and 15,978 for the previous weekend.

The ministry claims that 1,122 cases have occurred in the past 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 5,348 over Thursday, with the ministry claiming that 2,803 cases had occurred in 24 hours.

The overall incidence rate for Spain is now 128.97 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Friday it was 130.51 and last Monday 142. The incidence rate remains under 100 in eight regions. It is at its lowest in the Balearic Islands (42), followed by the Valencia region (44), Extremadura (55), Murcia (66), Castilla La Mancha (72), Galicia (76), La Rioja (77) and Cantabria (95).

There have now been 60,651 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,195,062. The figure for the past 7 days is 28,554.

There are currently 8,682 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,112 are in intensive care. This represents 21.04% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Monday 15 March is now 72,424 – an increase of 166 since Friday. It is now a total of 336 deaths in the past 7 days.

The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 1,122 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 15 March, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 208 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 297)
  • 183 in Madrid (1,059)
  • 119 in the Canary Islands (233)
  • 104 in Asturias (142)
  • 77 in Castilla y León (181)
  • 72 in Andalusia (139)
  • 63 in Catalonia (129)
  • 56 in the Valencia Region (95)
  • 46 in Aragón (156)
  • 42 in Galicia (40)
  • 40 in Navarra (68)
  • 26 in Cantabria (39)
  • 19 in Extremadura (62)
  • 14 in the Balearic Islands (25)
  • 13 in La Rioja (15)
  • 12 in Murcia (49)
  • in Castilla La Mancha (34)
  • 9 in Ceuta (6)
  • 11 in Melilla (34)

Spain suspends use of AstraZeneca vaccine

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 15 March) show that Spain has received 6,655,195 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 5,644,895 jabs have been administered. 1,693,674 people have now received a second jab. ‘State of Alarm’ – Easter restrictions across Spain

Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.

The Spanish Health Ministry, in agreement with the majority of Spain’s regional health authorities, has confirmed the perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, (as well as for the ‘San José’ holiday for the regions that celebrate it) in order to prevent ‘national tourism’The measures apply to all mainland Spain; the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands are exempt from the restrictions. Click here for all details: Details of curfews & restrictions for all regions of Spain during ‘State of Alarm’

Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain

Spain has again extended its travel ban on arrivals from the UK, as well as from Brazil and South Africa in order to combat the new variants of Covid-19. The latest extension will now be until 6pm on 30 March. Full details here: Spain suspends flight arrivals from UK, except for Spanish citizens and residents

Also, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
