Tourist rescued from drowning at Sitges beach

The local emergency services on Friday rescued a 70-year-old tourist of Irish nationality, but resident in Prague, who was drowning on the Ribera beach near La Fragata.

The incident happened around 5pm, when some people saw that a bather was having trouble getting out of the water.

After a few minutes, teams from the local police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, the firemen and the Emergency Medical Services (SEM) arrived, and when they saw her critical condition, they called a helicopter. It arrived shortly after and landed on the same beach, with the woman in a semi-conscious state.

First reports indicated that when the helicopter arrived, the woman was dead. Later reports rectified this, however, stating that she was taken to Bellvitge Hospital, having already recovered and conscious.
