The Fiddler of Sitges: a new competition as part of the Irish Arts Festival

At this year’s Irish Arts Festival in Catalonia, organised by Creative Connexions Ireland and being held in Sitges from 27-30 October, there will be a new international folk fiddle competition – ‘The Fiddler of Sitges’.

Dublin fiddle player Claire Sherry, Roscommon fiddle player Mossie Martin and Catalan fiddle player Anaís Falcó will be joining forces to launch this inaugural award, and it is open to all folk fiddle players aged 17 and above.

The Fiddler of Sitges competition will take place on Friday 28 October and the prize money will be €200, plus a trophy. The winner will also be invited to play at a concert on Sunday 30 October, the final day of the Festival.

Candidates taking part in the competition will be asked to play three contrasting folk tunes, with the award to be announced in Els Jardins del Retiro at 3.30pm on the day.

To enter before 1 October, please email fiddle@artscope.ie for entry details.

From Thursday 27 October until Sunday 30 October, this year’s Irish Arts Festival will see world premieres of new Irish works, a high-energy dance event and the dynamic folk orchestra NoCrows – a unique group with diverse musical roots, from Irish traditional to Latin rumba, classical, jazz, rock and Balkan music.

The festival is also delighted to have the iconic Mercat Vell in Sitges as a new home for the evening and late-night gigs.

With over 80 performers in total, and more than 60 events over 4 days, there will be something to suit everybody. Tickets will go on sale from Sunday 4 September and for updates visit: www.creative-connexions.eu
