Covid figures have skyrocketed in Sitges following the Carnival

Covid-19 figures have skyrocketed in Sitges in recent days, due to the effects of the Carnival. The number of new cases, the rebound risk and the rate of contagion have all increased, but as in previous months during this sixth wave, the symptoms are light in the vast majority of cases.

Since last Thursday, 123 new positive cases have been registered in Sitges. In the previous seven days it had been 91. This figure is expected to increase further in the coming days, as notification of positive cases caused by the Carnival only began to be known from Thursday.

The Carnival factor appears to be the cause of the current increase. And this is also reflected in a decrease in the average age of new cases, which is now 36 in Sitges. The percentage of positive cases in four days has increased in Sitges by 1.52%, whilst the Catalan average has been 0.53%. In Sant Pere de Ribes it was 0.70%.

The The rebound risk (iEPG)* has also skyrocketed. Last Tuesday it was 472 points. It started to rise on Wednesday and by Thursday it had again exceeded 1,000 points, reaching 1,045. In Vilanova, where the Carnival has also been celebrated, it is at 1,382 points. The Catalan average is 602.

The other indicators have also risen, such as the rate of contagion (RT), which is now at 1.45 in Sitges (for Catalonia it is at 0.91). In Sant Pere de Ribes it is 0.98 and in Vilanova it is 1.65. The positivity of the tests performed has also risen again above 12%.

*The potential rebound risk (iEPG) measures possible new cases diagnosed over the next 14 days, to evaluate the growth or slowdown in the contagion. It is calculated by multiplying the accumulated incidence rate (IA) and the rate of contagion (RT).
