More than 30 wineries are now making Malvasia de Sitges

More than 30 Catalan wineries are currently producing Malvasia de Sitges in a process of expanding their variety. These wineries – most of them in the Penedès – have only joined Malvasia in recent years. At the beginning of the last decade there were only five, in addition to the Hospital de Sitges itself.

The increase has occurred thanks to the cuttings of Llegat Llopis, first extracted from the plots of Aiguadolç, owned by the Hospital, and which have given life to more Malvasias planted across Catalonia. The first professional fair was held during Malvasia Week, at the Hotel ME, where most of the producers attended.

The production of Malvasia is a delicate process. That is why it is considered a luxury wine. In the early 1990s, production at the Hospital was 4,000 bottles. Currently, it is between 10,000 and 15,000, depending on the vintage, distributed between Blanc Subur, Llegat Llopis, Monembàsia and the Malvasias Dolça and Seca.
