The Sunway Chess Open Championship started on Monday, with the participation of 396 players from 50 different countries, who will compete until 23 December, when the final will be held.
The high participation and profile of the players, both professionals and amateurs, has made the Sunway Chess Open one of the most important chess tournaments in Spain and one of the benchmarks on the continent.
During the tournament, the Sunway Hotel is completely dedicated to chess. The six convention and meeting rooms available, as well as the interiors of the Vento bar, host the games. The organisation has also set up an outdoor tent, where games are also being held.
Among the participants are some great chess masters, such as the previous champion, the Ukrainian Anton Korobov. There are also other professionals such as the Indians Nihal Sarin and Atul Dahale, the Uzbek Nodirbek Abdussatorov, the Indonesian Irene Sunkadar and Spain’s Natacha Ben.
The tournament – funded by the same hotel and directed by Francesc González – was inaugurated on Sunday 12 December, with a special Queens’ Day dedicated to the players. The games are broadcast on special chess channels, in English, French and Spanish. Click here for all details.
