During these weeks the Garraf is in full harvest and one of the first conclusions is that this year there will be less grape production compared to other years, but it will be of a higher quality.
The lack of rain in recent months, in already a particularly dry year, will mean a decrease in production in some of the grape varieties, although the various producers in the area say that this year’s grapes are very healthy. In addition, the slightly humid climate has contributed to the vines not being affected by the mildew fungus, that has been harming crops in the whole of the Penedès region.
The vineyards of the Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista, located in the Aiguadolç area, have produced 5,000 kilos of Malvasia de Sitges grapes, a figure that represents only a third of the harvest in 2020. In addition to the weather conditions, the presence of wild boars in Aiguadolç – despite some measures having been taken since last year – and the harmful effect from pigeons at the hospital, have both contributed to the decline.
