Coronavirus in Spain (24 Aug) – rate of decrease of incidence rate has slowed

CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 24 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,804,424. This is an overall increase of 10,072 against the figure released on Monday, of which 5,222 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Monday had seen an overall increase of 23,899 over Friday, of which 2,261 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen another 11 points to 305.61 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Monday it was 317.35 and Friday 345.18.

The incidence rate has fallen since yesterday for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, as follows:

  • Under 11 – 342 (Friday was 352)
  • Aged 12-19 – 639 (665)
  • Aged 20-29 517 (545)
  • Aged 30-39 – 302 (317)
  • Aged 40-49 – 242 (250)
  • Aged 50-59 – 211 (217)
  • Agend 60-69 – 177 (184)
  • Aged 70-79 – 158 (165)
  • Over 80 – 232 (238)

There have now been 145,013 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,804,424. The figure for the past 7 days is 61,579. 

There are currently 7,959 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (8,330 yesterday), of which 1,769 are in intensive care (1,839). This represents 19.28% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (20.04%). It remains highest at 38.33% in Catalonia (39.47%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Tuesday 24 Aug is 83,527 – an increase of 190 since Monday, the highest daily increase since May.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 5,222 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Tuesday 24 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,283 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 241)
  • 938 in Catalonia (330)
  • 470 in Castilla y León (193)
  • 459 in the Basque Country (332)
  • 396 in Extremadura (165)
  • 215 in Galicia (168)
  • 206 in the Canary Islands (163)
  • 203 in Aragón (109)
  • 194 in Cantabria (92)
  • 163 in Murcia (28)
  • 137 in the Valencia Region (13)
  • 112 in Andalusia (72)
  • 112 in the Balearic Islands (96)
  • 102 in Navarra (86)
  • 87 in Asturias (68)
  • 66 in La Rioja (49)
  • in Castilla La Mancha (18) 
  • 51 in Ceuta (23)
  • 20 in Melilla (15)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 24 Aug) show that Spain has administered 63,938,402 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 35,831,729 people have now received at least one jab, representing 75.5% of the total population. 31,653,643 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 66.7% of the total population.
