CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 23 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,794,352. This is an overall increase of 23,899 against the figure released on Friday, of which 2,261 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 12,450 over Thursday, of which 6,313 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen another 27 points to 317.35 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Friday it was 345.18 and Thursday 360.56.

The incidence rate has fallen since yesterday for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, as follows:

  • Under 11 – 352 (Friday was 374)
  • Aged 12-19 – 665 (726)
  • Aged 20-29 545 (620)
  • Aged 30-39 – 317 (350)
  • Aged 40-49 – 250 (265)
  • Aged 50-59 – 217 (233)
  • Agend 60-69 – 184 (197)
  • Aged 70-79 – 165 (175)
  • Over 80 – 238 (250)

There have now been 150,586 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,794,352. The figure for the past 7 days is 61,708. 

There are currently 8,330 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (8,166 on Friday), of which 1,839 are in intensive care (1,818). This represents 20.04% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (19.83%). It remains highest at 39.47% in Catalonia (40.93%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Monday 23 Aug is 83,337 – an increase of 201 since Friday. This is the worst figure for a weekend period since 8 March, when there had been 298 deaths over the weekend.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 2,261 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 23 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 332 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 573)
  • 330 in Catalonia (863)
  • 241 in Madrid (1,397)
  • 193 in Castilla y León (556)
  • 168 in Galicia (450)
  • 165 in Extremadura (442)
  • 163 in the Canary Islands (277)
  • 109 in Aragón (413)
  • 96 in the Balearic Islands (135)
  • 92 in Cantabria (137)
  • 86 in Navarra (134)
  • 72 in Andalusia (270)
  • 68 in Asturias (85)
  • 49 in La Rioja (103)
  • 28 in Murcia (221)
  • 18 in Castilla La Mancha (15) 
  • 13 in the Valencia Region (173)
  • 23 in Ceuta (30)
  • 15 in Melilla (39)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 23 Aug) show that Spain has administered 63,590,985 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 35,667,383people have now received at least one jab, representing 75.2% of the total population. 31,447,188 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 66.3% of the total population.
