CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 28 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,668,658. This is an overall increase of 5,482 against the figure released on Thursday, of which 2,517 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Thursday had seen an overall increase of 5,290 over Wednesday, of which 2,510 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped by just one point to 124.34 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Thursday it was 125.02 and Wednesday 126.30.

All regions now have an incidence rate under 200. It is under 100 in eight regions: Valencia (32), the Balearic Islands (38), Asturias (68), Galicia (74), Murcia (76), Extremadura (76), the Canary Islands (77) and Cantabria (82). 

There have now been 59,001 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,668,658. The figure for the past 7 days is 26,795

There are currently 4,813 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,426 are in intensive care. This represents 14.71% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Friday 28 May is now 79,905 – an increase of 17 since Thursday – the lowest daily increase since last August.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 2,517 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 28 May, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 801 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 844)
  • 338 in the Basque Country (311)
  • 296 in Andalusia (293)
  • 254 in Castilla y León (218)
  • 145 in Aragón (151)
  • 112 in the Canary Islands (137)
  • 99 in Catalonia (103)
  • 89 in Murcia (53) 
  • 77 in Navarra (93)
  • 66 in Galicia (47)
  • 56 in Asturias (32)
  • 44 in Extremadura (49)
  • 43 in Cantabria (49)
  • 37 in the Valencia Region (54)
  • 26 in La Rioja (24)
  • 16 in Castilla La Mancha (5) 
  • in the Balearic Islands (28)
  • 0 in Ceuta (4)
  • 10 in Melilla (15)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 28 May) show that Spain has received 28,024,880 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 26,133,689 jabs have been administered. 17,707,320 people have now received at least one jab, representing 37.3% of the population. 8,804,363 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 18.6% of the population.
