The first full weekend in Sitges this year without the State of Alarm resulted in a significant influx of visitors, much greater activity in the shops, and the first reservations for a lunchtime, evening and nighttime service at restaurants.
Although the restriction of social gatherings is maintained at a maximum of six people, the increase in the hours that bars and restaurants are allowed to remain open, as well as free mobility now permitted throughout Catalonia, resulted in an influx of visitors, mainly from the Barcelona area.
The positive effects on the local economy of the relaxing of restrictions were clear to see, with the streets in town full of visitors and already some tourists. The C32 motorway also enabled two more toll gates for the traffic flowing in the direction of Sitges, in anticipation of the number of vehicles. Restaurants recorded their first bookings for evenings and nighttime, and in some cases they were fully booked.
Also over the weekend some more hotels re-opened, after the long autumn and winter of the pandemic. The Medium-Sitges Park on Carrer Jesús re-opened again, while all four-star establishments are already now open, after the re-opening of the Dolce hotel last week.
Whilst the relaxing of restrictions is giving positive results for local shops and especially bars and restaurants, hotels are expected to have an even slower recovery, waiting for tourists from across Spain and abroad. However, several establishments have created weekend offers, enabling them to target clients to compensate for outstanding losses suffered in recent months.
With the good news that Sitges has recently also received nine Blue Flag distinctions for its beaches in 2021 – making it the municipality in Catalonia with the most Blue Flags and the 4th in Spain – combined with the clinical trial taking place this week for the safe re-opening of nightlife – there is a mood of optimism for the town’s local economy, and in the hope of a good summer season ahead.
