CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 11 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,586,333. This is an overall increase of 4,941 against the figure released on Monday, and of which 2,768 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Monday had seen an overall increase of 13,984 cases over Friday, of which 1,349 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this third wave of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped another eight points to 180.69 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Monday it was 188.97 and Friday 198.60. Last Tuesday it was 213.90.

It now remains above the ‘extreme risk’ level in four regions: the Basque Country (387), Madrid (291), Navarra (261) and Aragón (279). It is under 100 in seven regions: Valencia (34), the Balearic Islands (58), Murcia (65), the Canary Islands (84), Extremadura (88), Galicia (92) and Asturias (92).

There have now been 85,737 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,586,333. The figure for the past 7 days is 37,028

There are currently 8,106 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,038 are in intensive care. This represents 20.48% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday 11 May is now 79,100 – an increase of 205 since Monday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 2,768 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Tuesday 11 May, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,099 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 226)
  • 424 in the Basque Country (344)
  • 265 in Castilla y León (116)
  • 156 in Aragón (84)
  • 119 in Andalusia (67)
  • 101 in the Canary Islands (74)
  • 89 in Catalonia (65)
  • 75 in Navarra (60)
  • 72 in Galicia (95)
  • 51 in Asturias (37)
  • 51 in Cantabria (30)
  • 50 in Extremadura (28)
  • 45 in Murcia (14) 
  • 44 in the Valencia Region (40)
  • 39 in Castilla La Mancha (18)
  • 36 in La Rioja (31)
  • 27 in the Balearic Islands (12)
  • 0 in Ceuta (0)
  • 24 in Melilla (8)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 11 May) show that Spain has received 23,107,595 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 20,162,661 jabs have been administered. 14,028,954 people have now received at least one jab, representing 29.6% of the population. 6,327,447 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 13.3% of the population.
