CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 7 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,567,408. This is an overall increase of 8,186 against the figure released on Thursday, and of which 3,933 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Thursday had seen an overall increase of 7,690 cases over Wednesday, of which 4,234 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this third wave of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped another four points to below 200, and is now at 198.60 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days – the best figure since 13 April (196). On Thursday it was 202.20 and Wednesday 205.52. Last Friday it was 229. It now remains above the ‘extreme risk’ level in five regions: the Basque Country (447), Madrid (317), Navarra (296), Catalonia (251) and Aragón (293). It is under 100 in six regions: Valencia (40), the Balearic Islands (60), Murcia (69), Galicia (93), the Canary Islands (90) and Extremadura (94).

There have now been 94,236 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,567,408. The figure for the past 7 days is 39,973

There are currently 8,605 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,183 are in intensive care. This represents 21.85% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Friday 7 May is now 78,792 – an increase of 66 since Thursday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 3,933 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 7 May, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,506 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,698)
  • 591 in the Basque Country (634)
  • 286 in Castilla y León (274)
  • 267 in Andalusia (253)
  • 260 in Aragón (336)
  • 183 in Catalonia (213)
  • 125 in Navarra (134)
  • 117 in the Canary Islands (150)
  • 101 in Galicia (113)
  • 89 in the Valencia Region (79)
  • 71 in Cantabria (69)
  • 66 in Asturias (49)
  • 61 in Extremadura (57)
  • 50 in Murcia (37) 
  • 49 in Castilla La Mancha (60)
  • 40 in La Rioja (45)
  • 33 in the Balearic Islands (18)
  • 1 in Ceuta (1)
  • 37 in Melilla (14)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 7 May) show that Spain has received 21,100,665 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 19,048,132 jabs have been administered. 13,271,511 people have now received at least one jab, representing 28% of the population. 5,956,451 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 12.6% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ end this Sunday 9 May

Spain’s current State of Alarm ends this Sunday 9 May and it will not be extended further. The State of Alarm has been in place since last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
