CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 3 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,540,430. This is an overall increase of 16,353 against the figure released on Friday, and of which 1,812 have occurred in the past 24 hours.
Friday had seen an overall increase of 9,135 cases over Thursday, of which 4,710 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate has dropped six points to 223.75 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Friday it was 229.20 and on Thursday 230.07. It remains above the ‘extreme risk’ level in seven regions: the Basque Country (496), Madrid (368), Navarra (332), Catalonia (298), Aragón (297), La Rioja (286) and Cantabria (254). It remains under 100 in just four regions: Valencia (42), the Balearic Islands (61), Murcia (71) and Galicia (96).
There have now been 106,173 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,540,430. The figure for the past 7 days is 47,643.
There are currently 9,747 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,323 are in intensive care. This represents 23.10% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Monday 3 May is now 78,293 – an increase of 77 since Friday. The number of deaths last weekend was 147.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 1,812 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 3 May, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 483 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 764)
- 295 in Madrid (1,710)
- 160 in Aragón (377)
- 148 in Castilla y León (305)
- 118 in the Canary Islands (144)
- 111 in Cantabria (135)
- 105 in Navarra (145)
- 74 in Andalusia (322)
- 59 in Catalonia (132)
- 52 in the Valencia Region (117)
- 47 in Galicia (123)
- 45 in La Rioja (54)
- 41 in Asturias (112)
- 39 in Extremadura (88)
- 12 in Castilla La Mancha (83)
- 11 in Murcia (66)
- 10 in the Balearic Islands (21)
- 2 in Ceuta (2)
- 0 in Melilla (10)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 3 May) show that Spain has received 17,610,225 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 17,130,598 jabs have been administered. 12,162,359 people have now received at least one jab, representing 25.6% of the population. 5,098,903 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 10.7% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – current restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021 and the government has recently said that it will not be extending it further beyond that date. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry imposed a perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. After 9 April, each region has returned to applying its own measures, in line with powers granted under the State of Alarm.
