CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 27 November for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,628,208. This is an overall increase of 10,853 against the figure released on Thursday. (Last Friday’s data had shown an increase of 15,156). The ministry claims that 5,008 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours (last Friday the figure had been 6,021 for a 24 hour period).

The overall accumulated incidence rate for Spain is now 307.30 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days (yesterday’s figure was 325.50 and last Friday had been 419.48). It now remains over 500 in just one region: Castilla y León (501.26).

The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.

There have now been 144,511 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,628,208. The figure for the past 7 days is 55,555.

According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 14,819 across Spain – of which 2,777 are in intensive care (UCI). This currently represents a total 28.44% occupation of intensive care wards for Covid-19 patients across Spain (yesterday’s figure was 28.64%). The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Friday 27 November is now 44,668 – an increase of 294 since Thursday. Last Friday’s data had shown 328 deaths in 24 hours. It is now a total of 1,177 deaths in the past 7 days.

The highest increase of deaths to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 24 November when 537 were registered. The peak of recorded deaths for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 were registered.

Increase in infections

Figures released on Thursday had shown an overall increase of 12,289 infections over Wednesday, with the ministry claiming that 5,073 had occurred in a 24-hour period.

Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 10,222 infections over Tuesday, yet 5,400 in a 24-hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.

Of the 5,008 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 27 November, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,022 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,061)
  • 598 in Catalonia (728)
  • 554 in the Basque Country (503)
  • 514 in Andalusia (521)
  • 433 in Galicia (439)
  • 336 in Aragón (301)
  • 286 in Asturias (259)
  • 259 in Extremadura (189)
  • 242 in the Valencia Region (252)
  • 162 in Navarra (140)
  • 119 in the Balearic Islands (71)
  • 108 in the Canary Islands (128)
  • 99 in Cantabria (119)
  • 86 in Murcia (100)
  • 80 in Castilla La Mancha (140)
  • 63 in La Rioja (89)
  • 21 in Castilla y León (5)
  • 8 in Ceuta (14)
  • 18 in Melilla (14)

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain

The Spanish Congress voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. Negative PCR test required

Since Monday 23 November, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries must show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. *Discrepancies in figures

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
