CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 10 November for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,398,613. This is an overall increase of 17,395 against the figure released on Monday. The ministry claims that 7,552 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours.

The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 new cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 new cases were registered.

Of the 17,395 overall increase in confirmed cases since Monday’s figures, 2,781 are in Catalonia, 2,338 in the Valencia region, 1,751 in Castilla y León, 1,368 in the Basque Country and 1,243 in Madrid.

There have now been 246,699 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,398,613. The figure for the past 7 days is 112,011.

According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 20,943 across Spain – of which 3,064 are in intensive care (UCI). This currently represents a total 31.70% occupation of intensive care wards for Covid-19 patients across Spain. In La Rioja and Aragón the figures are 60% and 51.52% respectively. Hospital data could include patients who have shown symptoms of Coronavirus, but are still awaiting test results. The full data shows the numbers per region and % occupancy of UCI wards.

The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday 10 November is now 39,756 – an increase of 411 since Monday. This is the highest figure to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain. It is now a total of 1,209 deaths in the last 7 days.

The peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 deaths were registered.

Increase in infections

Figures released on Monday had shown an overall increase of 52,386 infections against Friday, with the ministry claiming that 4,441 had occurred in a 24 hour period.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 22,516 infections against Thursday, yet 9,150 in a 24 hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.

Of the 7,552 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Tuesday 10 November, the numbers per region are as follows:

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain

The Spanish Congress recently voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The nationwide State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. *Discrepancies in figures

Although the Health Ministry updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures on 19 June following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for Spain during the first half of this year.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
