CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 4 November for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,284,408. This is an overall increase of 25,042 against the figure released on Tuesday. The ministry claims that 8,924 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours.

The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 new cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 new cases were registered.

The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths is now 38,118 – with the ministry having added a further 1,623 since the start of the pandemic in March to the overall figure. This is a result of a change in the criteria used, with the result that 1,326 deaths diagnosed before 11 May have now been included in the overall data released today. It is a total of 888 deaths in the last 7 days. The current known peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.

Of the 25,042 overall increase in confirmed cases since Tuesday’s figures, 4,820 are in Catalonia, 4,561 in Madrid, 2,774 are in Andalusia, 2,549 in Castilla y León, 2,350 in the Valencia region, 1,347 in Castilla-La Mancha, 1,133 in Murcia, and 1,029 in Aragón.

There have now been 248,653 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,284,408. The figure for the past 7 days is 110,988.

According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 20,325 across Spain – of which 2,786 are in intensive care (UCI). This currently represents a total 29,11% occupation of intensive care wards for Covid-19 patients across Spain. The occupation is 53.33% in La Rioja, 49.33% in Aragón, 42.55% in Catalonia, 39.33% in Navarra and 38.01% in Madrid. Hospital data could include patients who have shown symptoms of Coronavirus, but are still awaiting test results. The full data shows the numbers per region and % occupancy of UCI wards.

Increase in infections

Figures released on Tuesday had shown an overall increase of 18,669 infections against Monday, with the ministry claiming that 5,141 had occurred in a 24 hour period.

Monday had seen an overall increase of 55,019 infections against Friday, yet 4,334 in a 24 hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.

Of the 8,924 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 4 November, the numbers per region are as follows:

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions increasing across Spain

The Spanish Congress has voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The nationwide State of Alarm was declared on Sunday to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. Most regions have now issued border closures and there are many municipality confinements. Murcia and Castilla y León have now also announced the closure of all bars and restaurants, with the exception of takeaway and delivery services. *Discrepancies in figures

Although the Health Ministry updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures on 19 June following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for Spain during the first half of this year.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
