The Hospital Sant Joan Baptista, the oldest institution in Sitges, is celebrating 700 years of history, with a wide programme of activities that will last throughout 2024.
The full calendar was presented on 20 February, coinciding with the first document certifying the existence of the hospital.
The origin of the hospital dates back to 1324, the year in which the knight Bernat de Fonollar, lord of the castle of Sitges, established a hospital in the current complex of the Maricel, and intended it to welcome the most destitute.
The most prominent moment of the 700th anniversay celebrations will come on Corpus Christi. The Foundation will have the honour of making the ‘flower carpet’ for the Cap de la Vila in the town.
The gardens at the hospital will also host the traditional National Exhibition of Carnations, between 1-9 June. The building work that will be taking place at the Societat Recreativa El Retiro will make it impossible for its gardens to host the exhibition this year, and for that reason the hospital will be the venue during the 2024 edition of Corpus Christi.
