Sitges Christmas tree and a garbage container vandalised, just hours apart

Sitges witnessed two individual acts of vandalism within a few hours of each other over the past few days. One in the early hours of Sunday morning, when the Christmas tree in the Cap de la Vila was damaged, and the other in broad daylight on Monday, when a garbage container was set on fire in the Carrer de Pau Casals.

The Christmas tree in Cap de la Vila has already been restored to its initial state following the intervention of the municipal services, after vandals cut down several branches and stole some of the festive decorations.

The lights on the tree had only been switched on during Friday afternoon, for the town’s first Christmas event, attended by the Mayor, Aurora Carbonell, and the councillor for economic promotion, David Martínez.

Martínez was the first to denounce the act of vandalism with a tweet on Sunday morning, exclaiming: ‘What incivility! How sad, really. It seems unreal that there are people who do these things and have no respect for anything.’

On Monday, just after 1pm, a neighbour alerted 112 about a rubbish container burning in Carrer de Pau Casals. The police moved quickly and used a fire extinguisher, before the fire brigade arrived and finally extinguished the fire.

The Christmas tree repaired, on Monday at noon.
