Incivility causing problems in some areas of Sitges

With the high tourist season in Sitges over, it seems that the litter and garbage issues have improved a little, according to some of the residents who had experienced problems in their areas during the summer.

The Sitges Town Council has said that it is the ‘incivility of some people’ that is the main cause of the problems. They refer to people who leave garbage bags alongside the local waste containers, causing strong odors and then also problems in the collection and cleaning of the containers in different areas of Sitges. This is the case in the area of Bassa Rodona, where some residents have complained.

Despite being aware that incivility is the main cause of the problem, local residents have been asking for solutions and more coordination from the council and the concessionaire company that manages the cleaning contract.

Jordi Sandiumenge, a resident of Bassa Rodona, for example, believes that the problem is one of coordination. ‘In the early hours of the morning a person passes by with a blower and then the vehicle that collects litter passes by,’ he explained. ‘Well, at the same time as they collect and empty the containers, there should a person collecting the dirt left outside of the containers.’

The council is aware of the problem and has acknowledged that the collection of overflowing garbage is an insufficient service. This deficiency is to be resolved in a new contract that will be tendered during the year 2024.

In the meantime, the council has been carrying out ‘cleaning raids’ under many containers, and in the most problematic locations. The council also has inspectors whose task it is to monitor uncivil behaviour by reporting and sanctioning, where appropriate. The problem of incivility, however – which is not a minor issue in Sitges – is that it is often difficult to identify the offenders and, therefore, to pursue and correct things.
