The local Sitges police have stepped up drug and alcohol checks of drivers over the past weekend.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday were the days when many pre-Christmas lunches, dinners and parties were held between friends and work colleagues – and the local police were out in force.
Police officers carried out 77 blood alcohol tests, with four positive results, and a further six drug tests resulting in three positive cases. Drivers of vehicles, including scooters and bicycles, are required to take these tests and if they refuse to do so, they could be subject to penalties ranging from 500 to 1,000 euros.
Now that the dates for the Christmas and New Year festivities are here, the local police are asking for the collaboration, prudence and responsibility of all citizens in traveling by car during the Christmas holidays. Police recommend using public transport to attend Christmas meals if you do not want to moderate your alcohol consumption.
