The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 20 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 5,535,231. This is an overall increase of 79,704 against the figure released on Friday, of which 9,993 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 33,359 over Thursday, of which 18,773 were registered in 24 hours.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has risen another 98 points to 609.38 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Friday it was 511.00 and Thursday 472.90. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Castilla-La Mancha at 302. It is at its highest in Navarra at 1,393 – followed by the Basque Country at 1,123. The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged 20-29, at 854. The incidence rates per age group are as follows:

  • Aged 11 and under – 776.74 (previously 705.13)
  • 12-19 years – 439.92 (342.27)
  • 20-29 years – 854.26 (631.75)
  • 30-39 years – 766.48 (614.28)
  • 40-49 years – 724.73 (621.50)
  • 50-59 years – 528.41 (448.38)
  • 60-69 years – 494.83 (454.41)
  • 70-79 years – 216.36 (208.10)
  • Aged 80 and over – 176.46 (163.65)

There have now been 289,156 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 5,535,231. The figure for the past 7 days is 179,222

There are currently 7,501 people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 6,667), representing a 6.03% occupation of hospital beds across Spain (5.35%). 1,442 are in intensive care (1,306), representing 15.49% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (14.03%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Monday 20 Dec is now 88,793 – an increase of 85 since Friday.

Increase in infections per region & current incidence rate

Of the 9,993 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours (and current incidence rate) on Monday 20 Dec, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,900 in Madrid (current incidence rate: 651)
  • 1,531 in the Basque Country (1,123)
  • 1,218 in Castilla y León (842)
  • 1,043 in the Canary Islands (566)
  • 809 in Aragón (938)
  • 809 in Galicia (567)
  • 716 in Navarra (1,359)
  • 524 in Murcia (651)
  • 406 in Extremadura (444)
  • 305 in Cantabria (510)
  • 267 in La Rioja (959)
  • 208 in Andalusia (379)
  • 128 in the Balearic Islands (613)
  • 126 in Catalonia (548)
  • 125 in the Valencia Region (668)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (with data collated up to Thursday 16 December) show that Spain has administered 82,518,671 jabs of the Covid vaccine. 37,777,929 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 79.6% of the total population. A further 10,507,992 ‘booster’ jabs have also been administered.
