CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 19 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,758,003. This is an overall increase of 12,445 against the figure released on Wednesday, of which 6,811 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 11,956 over Tuesday, of which 7,006 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen another 17 points to 360.56 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Wednesday it was 378.13 and Tuesday 398.94.

The incidence rate has fallen since yesterday for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, as follows:

  • Under 11 – 387 (yesterday was 403)
  • Aged 12-19 – 762 (804)
  • Aged 20-29 665 (715)
  • Aged 30-39 – 368 (389)
  • Aged 40-49 – 273 (281)
  • Aged 50-59 – 241 (249)
  • Agend 60-69 – 205 (212)
  • Aged 70-79 – 180 (186)
  • Over 80 – 254 (259)

There have now been 171,088 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,758,003. The figure for the past 7 days is 67,858. 

There are currently 8,507 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (8,819 yesterday), of which 1,847 are in intensive care (1,861). This represents 20.12% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (20.28%). It remains highest at 41.49% in Catalonia (42.50%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Thursday 19 Aug is 83,004 – another increase of 121 since Wednesday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 6,811 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Thursday 19 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,665 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,676)
  • 945 in Catalonia (1,023)
  • 633 in the Basque Country (687)
  • 567 in Castilla y León (587)
  • 435 in Extremadura (439)
  • 400 in Aragón (250)
  • 313 in the Canary Islands (285)
  • 291 in Galicia (319)
  • 290 in Andalusia (213)
  • 281 in Murcia (334)
  • 196 in the Valencia Region (428)
  • 182 in the Balearic Islands (167)
  • 179 in Cantabria (157)
  • 150 in Navarra (148)
  • 104 in La Rioja (107)
  • 94 in Asturias (92)
  • 19 in Castilla La Mancha (28) 
  • 34 in Ceuta (45)
  • 33 in Melilla (21)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 19 Aug) show that Spain has administered 62,665,513 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 35,269,276 people have now received at least one jab, representing 74.3% of the total population. 30,565,129 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 64.4% of the total population.
