CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 7 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,702,328. This is an overall increase of 17,681 against the figure released on Friday (last Monday’s data had shown an overall increase of 19,979 for the weekend period). The ministry claims that 1,800 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours (last Monday the figure had been 1,959 for a 24 hour period). Data today excludes any update from the Canary Islands for the past 24 hours.
The overall accumulated incidence rate for Spain is now 215.10 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days (Friday’s figure was 231.11 and last Monday had been 275.51). It remains over 300 in two regions: Asturias (304.17) and the Basque Country (308.73).
The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
There have now been 101,153 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,702,328. The figure for the past 7 days is 44,152.
The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Monday 7 December is now 46,646 – an increase of 394 since Friday. Last Monday’s data had shown 401 for the weekend period. It is now a total of 759 deaths in the past 7 days.
The highest increase of deaths to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 24 November when 537 were registered. The peak of recorded deaths for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections
Figures released on Friday had shown an overall increase of 8,745 infections over Thursday, with the ministry claiming that 4,372 had occurred in a 24-hour period.
Thursday had seen an overall increase of 10,127 infections over Wednesday, yet 4,765 in a 24-hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.
Of the 1,800 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 7 December, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 282 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 438)
- 239 in Galicia (344)
- 216 in Madrid (1,058)
- 206 in Catalonia (693)
- 136 in Andalusia (293)
- 132 in Castilla y León (8)
- 121 in Aragón (250)
- 115 in Asturias (229)
- 84 in the Balearic Islands (116)
- 82 in Navarra (82)
- 58 in Cantabria (151)
- 56 in Extremadura (145)
- 44 in La Rioja (41)
- 15 in Castilla La Mancha (102)
- 1 in Murcia (60)
- 1 in the Valencia Region (194)
- 0 in the Canary Islands (152) – no update today
- 7 in Ceuta (7)
- 5 in Melilla (9)

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain
The Spanish Congress voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. Negative PCR test required
Since Monday 23 November, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries must show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. *Discrepancies in figures
