CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 12 November for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,437,220. This is an overall increase of 19,511 against the figure released on Wednesday. The ministry claims that 7,759 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours. 

The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 new cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 new cases were registered.

Of the 19,511 overall increase in confirmed cases since Wednesday’s figures, 4,956 are in Andalusia, 2,140 in Madrid, 2,136 in the Valencia region, 2,081 in Castilla y León and 1,419 in the Basque Country. 

There have now been 237,224 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,437,220. The figure for the past 7 days is 105,143.

According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 20,525 across Spain – of which 3,123 are in intensive care (UCI). This currently represents a total 31.96% occupation of intensive care wards for Covid-19 patients across Spain. Hospital data could include patients who have shown symptoms of Coronavirus, but are still awaiting test results. The full data shows the numbers per region and % occupancy of UCI wards.

The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Thursday 12 November is now 40,461 – an increase of 356 since Wednesday. It is now a total of 1,295 deaths in the last 7 days.

The highest increase of deaths to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 10 November when 411 deaths were registered. The peak of recorded deaths for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 deaths were registered.

Increase in infections

Figures released on Wednesday had shown an overall increase of 19,096 infections over Tuesday, with the ministry claiming that 8,943 had occurred in a 24 hour period.

Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 17,395 infections against Monday, yet 7,552 in a 24 hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.

Of the 7,759 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Thursday 12 November, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,551 in Madrid (21,915 new cases in past 14 days)
  • 1,269 in the Basque Country (17,473)
  • 717 in Andalusia (46,597)
  • 705 in Aragón (12,068)
  • 605 in Asturias (5,643)
  • 553 in Galicia (8,547)
  • 449 in Extremadura (5,899)
  • 314 in Murcia (11,065)
  • 258 in Cantabria (2,970)
  • 234 in Navarra (5,343)
  • 221 in Catalonia (45,213)
  • 199 in the Valencia Region (14,871)
  • 186 in Castilla La Mancha (10,394)
  • 177 in La Rioja (2,502)
  • 104 in the Balearic Islands (2,881)
  • 104 in the Canary Islands (1,751)
  • 29 in Castilla y León (20,366)
  • 41 in Ceuta (878)
  • 43 in Melilla (848)

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain

The Spanish Congress recently voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The nationwide State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. *Discrepancies in figures

Although the Health Ministry updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures on 19 June following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for Spain during the first half of this year.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
