An unexploded shell from the Spanish Civil War has been discovered during renovation work being carried out on a house in El Vinyet area of Sitges.
The discovery of the shell fired during the Civil War, presumably by anti-aircraft units, comes four years after another shell was found at the bottom of the sea near Cala Ginesta, on the coast of Garraf.
The area where the house in El Vinyet currently being renovated is located was land that was originally comprised of vineyards. As it was soft ground, the fact that the shell fell upside down, leaving the detonator on top without exploding, could have allowed the projectile to sink and remain completely hidden.
In August 2018, a diver found another shell at the bottom of the sea near Cala Ginesta. It was 10 metres from the shoreline and at a depth of 3.5 metres. At the time, the Special Explosive Disposal Unit of the Navy’s Diving Centre based in Cartagena (Murcia) was called in to safely detonate the explosive.
