Street drinking parties – ‘botellons’ – are almost over in Sitges. Not all, as there are still young people and teenagers who gather on La Ribera promenade and in other parks and areas of the town during the early hours of Saturday and Sunday. There are still more than there were before the Covid restrictions, but far fewer than last summer.
The arrival of the cold weather at night, the end of the tourist season, and especially the full re-opening of nightlife has resulted in far fewer crowds of young people during the early hours on the promenade and the beaches of La Ribera and La Frigata.
Last Saturday morning, there were a few dozen who stayed down on the beach. In most cases, however, after leaving the music bars they spent time chatting in the street, whilst others joined groups already on the promenade.
Over the past few weeks there has been a steady decline of people not only heading to the promenade, but also out and about on the Primer de Maig and Joan Tarrida streets. On Carrer Sant Pau, where the only nightclub in Sitges is currently located, people gathered on the street during the opening hours.
With the decline of ‘botellons’, the number of incidents and conflicts at night has also decreased. The local police and the Mossos d’Esquadra have deactivated the special service they set up in Sitges (and other towns) over the summer – and the level of uncivil behaviour suffered by the residents of the streets near the promenade has also dropped.
