The current global crisis in maritime transport, with a shortage of containers and ships that are raising prices and causing delays – as well as a lack of electronic chips and components – are now provoking a shortage of stock in many shops across Catalonia, also in Sitges and Sant Pere of Ribes.
The lack of chips is mainly affecting modern technologies. ‘Products that use electronic chips, at the top level, which are related to mobile phones, are the most affected part,’ said Montse Fonoll, of the electrical appliances outlet, Fennel.
Jaume Andreu, from the computer store Micromina, also has the same problem. ‘There are shortages of stock, in general, of all the components,’ he said, ‘but we always try to find an alternative for customers.’
In other sectors, however, the lack of stock is having an impact on total turnover. This is the case of the textile industry, a field that is especially dependent on products that come from abroad. ‘This year it is impossible to find replacements, because the brands simply don’t have the stock,’ said Noelia Jiménez, of Outfit Sitges.
