Four dolphin pups seen on the shoreline of Garraf this summer

The coast of the Garraf has become an important area for grey-headed Risso’s dolphins. They are a species of cetacean, relatively large, and which feed mainly on cephalopods (squid, octopus and cuttlefish), normally located around 500 and 1,200 metres from the coast. Linear scars cover the bulk of their bodies, mostly from ‘social interaction’.

According to studies by the Cetacean Association in the area, these Risso’s dolphins have been observed year after year on the shoreline of the Garraf, as well as the presence of newborn pups. During 2020, 24 pups were registered, and four have been detected this summer.

The numbers, as well as the fact that some of the identified mothers have been seen with different pups in different years, prove the importance of the area for the species, according to the association.

The great diversity of marine life in the region includes other types of cetaceans, which are a protected species – and which means that navigation around them is regulated. During 2021, the Cetacean Association has observed six different species. They have also found an increase in whales, in groups of up to seven in the same area on certain days.
