The listed heritage building in the centre of Sitges known as ‘El Patronat’ is to receive 458,000 euros in aid from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda in Madrid to go towards its refurbishment.
The aid is part of the Spanish government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience plan and ‘Next Generation’ funds focused on promoting the comprehensive rehabilitation of public properties, responding to the criteria of sustainability, inclusion and aesthetic quality.
The project to rehabilitate and adapt the Patronat as a cultural space will have a total cost of 900,000 euros. The aid from the ministry will cover part of this cost and the rest will be covered by the Sitges Town Council itself, with its own funds or with other financing methods yet to be determined.
The preliminary project for the buildings’s new use as a cultural space for books and literary events was made public in Spring 2021. The project, which is currently still in its drafting stage, includes a public bookshop on the ground floor with an outdoor garden of 270m², and on the first floor (in the old chapel) a multi-purpose room for holding various cultural activities, such as book presentations, writing workshops, recitals, concerts or conferences.
The building is listed and the aim was to create a unique cultural project, adapting it to new uses and allowing a connection between Carrer de les Parellades and the inner courtyard.
Beyond the adaptation of the space with the enabling of the garden as a public space, bathrooms and elevator, the project includes the installation of solar panels and other elements that improve energy efficiency.
