Two arrested for alleged theft of equipment from Sitges film festival hotel

Mossos d’Esquadra agents from the Sitges police station have arrested two men for an alleged theft of electronic equipment from the Meliá Hotel, the main venue for the recent Sitges Film Festival.

The alleged theft took place on Tuesday 4 October, just before the launch of the film festival two days later, when staff and volunteers working at the festival had finalised all preparations for this year’s edition. The police received a tip off that two people were stealing computer equipment and mobile phones from the festival hotel.

After police arrived at the hotel to investigate, which included viewing images recorded by the security cameras, they could confirm that two men had accessed several rooms and offices and had then hidden the stolen material in a public yet sealed off area, with the intention of taking it away later.

The two alleged thieves fled when they became aware of the police presence, and the Mossos started a search of the area surrounding the hotel. Later, they were located and arrested on Aiguadolç beach. During the police action, it was possible to recover and return all the stolen material.

The two arrested, with numerous previous records, were taken to court and the investigating judge agreed their release on bail.
