70% of cases seen by Sitges Mediation Service are between neighbours

In November 2021, Sitges Town Council launched a free Mediation Service available to the public, with the aim of ‘improving co-existence and a more cohesive society’. The service offered a space to try and resolve all types of neighbourhood, community, educational or family disputes, among others, through dialogue.

Since the launch, a total of 103 disputes have been opened, of which 36 have been resolved with mutual agreement. The remaining disputes are either on-going, pending resolution, or cases where one of the parties has withdrawn the complaint. There are also situations where one of the parties does not want dialogue, and the mediator has instead referred the conflict to another service.

Of the conflicts dealt with, 70% are neighbourhood issues. The vast majority of conflicts are between Spanish nationals, but 15% of the mediations have also been in a foreign language.

The council’s mediation service does not intervene in conflicts of separation and divorce, nor in disputes where the council is involved as one of the parties. The mediation service is also not involved with commercial or consumer disputes, nor with issues of gender violence or where legal proceedings are already active.

The service is free and is located in the municipal offices on Carrer Major, on the corner with Plaça de l’Ajuntament, and you can also attend the OAC office in the town or the OAC in Les Botigues. The mediator carries out the service two days a week: Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 2pm and 3pm to 8pm.

To access the service, one of the parties involved must request it and also request an appointment via email at mediacio@sitges.cat or by telephone on: (+34) 603 850 967. The mediator will then contact the different parties to assess the viability of the process of mediation. ALSO READ: Sitges Town Council launches a free mediation service for citizens.
