Cleaning vessel collects 385 kg of waste from Sitges coastline from mid-June to end of July

The amount of waste that has been collected from the sea along the Sitges coastline during the first part of the summer has increased compared to the same time last year.

The cleaning vessel that operates along the coast collecting all the rubbish that is at the bottom of the sea has, from 15 June until the end of July, removed 385 kg of waste from the water, a figure that represents 77% of the 500 kg that was collected throughout the summer season of 2021.

It should be noted that 67% of the waste collected during the first part of this year’s campaign was plastic. In addition, a total of 119 kg of rubbish was collected from the seabed between 4-10 July alone.

The fact that can explain this increase in waste, according to Guillem Escolà, local councillor for beaches, is ‘the return to normality and tourist activity’. As Escolà acknowledged, ‘this highlights even more how necessary this service is to clean sea water’.

Running until 15 September, the Sitges ‘ecological boat’ travels the length of the coastline, 37.4 km, back and forth from Les Botigues beach to Cala del Gegant and Cala Xica, cleaning plastic and other floating waste from the sea.

The service is carried out 6 days a week, during 6 hours each day, approximately between 8am and 2pm, with the main objective of collecting and removing floating or semi-submerged debris from the sea.
