A monitoring project in the Garraf helps to preserve eagle species

The ‘Bonelli’s eagle’ (aquila fasciata) is one of the large birds of prey that inhabits the Garraf massif, and which during the 20th century suffered a strong threat of extinction across the country as a whole. But some recent projects that have been monitoring it have contributed to the conservation of the species.

A study that is currently being carried out in different parts of the territory and specifically in the Garraf, is being promoted by the Gremi d’Àrids de Catalunya, from the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Catalan government, and some mining operations.

The project is developed from the monitoring and occupation of breeding territories and unoccupied territories, with the aim of extracting data about the species, by installing a GPS transmitter to several eagles, as is the recent case of one that lives around the Cubetes quarry, in the municipality of Begues, and that is managed by the Cemex company.
