Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes enter emergency phase due to drought

Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes are on the list of just over 200 Catalan towns that have entered the emergency phase due to the drought in Catalonia.

The measure affects the municipalities that depend on the Ter Llobregat water system and this represents a large part of the population of Catalonia: around 6 million people. The emergency situation will be at grade 1, which means a limitation of 200 litres per inhabitant per day, including economic activities.

Entering this new phase will mean that it will not be possible to irrigate the artificial grass of the sports fields, if it is not with regenerated or ground water. Since the end of November, the pressure of the water reaching the houses has decreased and the use of water in private gardens is also being monitored.

To fight against the excessive consumption of water, the Sitges Town Council’s plenary meeting on Wednesday approved a sanctioning system. Sitges also plans to equip itself, in the coming months, with a regenerated water plant. The work already has a subsidy from the Next Generation funds of the European Union with a budget of one million euros and will be carried out on a municipal plot. The council is studying other measures, such as the possibility of desalinising the existing water wells in Recta de la Mata.
