‘Els Pastorets’ returns to the stage in Sitges

A Christmas classic in town, ‘Els Pastorets’ (‘The Little Shepherds’) returns to the stage on 23 and 28 December at the Prado (at 6.30pm and 9.30pm, respectively) with a revised choreography that aims to energise the performances while maintaining their essence.

Written by Rossend Fortunet i Busquets in 1932, this year Esteve Molero remains as musical director, while Carles Maicas takes over from Josep Maria Esteban as the artistic director.

Maicas, who already held this position nine years ago, said that his idea is ‘to try to make some changes to make it more dynamic, to get involved in improving what we have and to make it more attractive to people’. For example, one of the main updates is a change in the scenography: ‘We tried to make sure that people don’t find it long or, at least, that it doesn’t become so cumbersome.’

A novelty this year is that, before the session on 23 December, attendees can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with their ticket. In addition, as usual, it is possible that there will be some surprise for the session on the 28 December, the day of the Holy Innocents. Maicas said that Els Pastorets is open to everyone, and that everyone who wants to participate, whether by going on stage or helping out behind the scenes, is welcome.

The cast of the play, made up of around 50 people, varies from one year to the next, and it is not unusual to see how its members go through different roles. This is the case of Dani Martínez, who started acting eight years ago and has represented several characters, including Sant Miquel, Satanàs and his current role, Pastor Grillat.

‘The world of theatre is not easy, and this is the magic of Els Pastorets, giving everyone the opportunity to perform and also to see a zarzuela like the one we do in Sitges, with live music and a unique scenography,’ said Martínez. ‘We invite everyone from Sitges and the surrounding area to come and see and enjoy our adventures.’
