Sitges now has more containers to collect clothes for reuse and recycling

Sitges has six new containers for the collection of clothing for reuse and recycling. The local council has installed them on Carrer Artur Carbonell, Camí dels Capellans, Carrer Vidal i Barraquer, Carretera de les Costes, Passeig de l’Espígol (Quint Mar) and Carrer del Morro Curt (Garraf II).

With this increase, the town now has a total of 25 containers intended for this use (see map below), which are managed by a job placement company. The figure is approaching the ratio marked by the signatories of the ‘Pact for Circular Fashion’, which is to have one container for the collection of clothes for every 1,500 inhabitants.

The measure aims to contribute to the goal of reducing waste sent to landfill sites to a maximum of 10% before 2035.

Last year, around 60% of the total waste generated in Sitges went to the Hostalets de Pierola landfill site. Currently, 11% of the weight in the town’s waste containers corresponds to the textile sector. In other words, clothes, shoes, sheets, tablecloths, bags, cloths or accessories that are no longer used because they have been damaged, have become too small or have gone out of fashion.

According to data from the Catalan Waste Agency, the textile sector represents approximately 4% by weight of municipal waste overall.
